Planting guide: There’s a bountiful harvest for fall – Houston Chronicle

Fall brings out the best in vegetables. Prolonged periods of mild temperatures bring high-quality produce, says extension horticulturist Tom LeRoy.

Thing is, we must start now — or at least get beds ready for September planting.Tomatoes are planted in July so we can enjoy harvests before the first frost. As we move into September, we can add a diversity of warm- and cool-season crops to the garden, says LeRoy, whose vegetable class is included in the Harris County Master Gardeners fall course.Bush green beans are exceptional in the fall garden, he says. “The plants grow during the warm temperatures of early fall, and the bean pods mature during the milder temperatures of late October and November.”Warm-season summer squash also is planted in early September.
