Adventures of a wife and mother

Introducing Foods to the Picky Eater

I must confess, I was terribly spoiled to have three children who loved their veggies from infancy.  We just kept placing them on their plate and eventually they tried them and liked them.  Then along came Max.  We kept offering veggies to him, but he just ignored them.  Now he’s three, and loves fruits but not veggies.  It was time to up the ante.  I tried requiring him to eat a bite of veggie before he ate his other food, but he chose starvation.  I tried placing three little peas in his mouth then telling him not to spit them out, and placing them back in his mouth if he did.  About 30 minutes later he accidentally swallowed them- not really a success.  The GAPS book recommends offering a reward for trying a bite, but I have not found a reward that works yet.

Today I found something.  Peer pressure.  God provided three older siblings to eat their celery like sharks, and Max wanted to be one too.  Yeah!!!  He likes celery in peanut butter so much now he ate seconds and thirds.
